Clifton Wheeler (1883–1953) “Spring Storm”

Landscape painter, muralist and portraitist, Clifton Wheeler was born in 1883 in Hadley, IN. He studied art with William Forsyth in Indianapolis as well as with Kenneth Hayes Miller, William M. Chase and Robert Henri. He also studied art in New York, Italy and other locations in Europe. He was married to Hilah Drake Wheeler, also an artist. They had a daughter, Hilah Wheeler Remaily, who became a successful painter. Wheeler was a member of the Portfolio Club, the Indianapolis Literary Club and the Indiana Artists Club. In addition to his painting, he was also a teacher at Herron Art Institute, the University of Colorado, Butler University and Shortridge High School in Indianapolis.
